Easter week in Pozoblanco is home to one of the most unusual representations of the Passion in Andalusia.
The people of Pozoblanco have managed to seriously and respectfully maintain such beautiful age-old traditions as the "Cantos de Pasión" (Songs of Passion) taking place on Saturdays during Lent and whose lyrics reflect the Gospel corresponding to each Sunday in Lent.
From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, each of the days of the week in Pozoblanco has a special feature. The joy of the children with their olive branches and palm leaves accompanying Jesus on “La Borriquita” (Donkey), the Nazarenes in their habits forming the rows of penitents, the Roman soldiers on horseback with Jesus Rescued, the seriousness and humility of the penitents praying at the Stations of the Cross as they accompany the "Cristo de la Caridad", and the joy of the bells on Easter Sunday, are all symbols that give the Passion in Pozoblanco its strong identity and unique flavour.
In the early hours of Good Friday another unique manifestation takes place. The act representing the Arrest of Jesus of Nazareth, where Judas delivers Jesus to the Roman soldiers or "Executioners“and Pontius Pilate sentences Him to death.
Another unique event is the “Burning of Judas”, on Easter Saturday after the Vigil of the Resurrection, where the townsfolk of Pozoblanco burn effigies hanging in the squares made of straw, old clothes and wool, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus.
