Picena, together with Laroles, Mairena and the hamlet of Júbar, are a part of the municipality of Nevada. It is located on the eastern threshold of the Upper Alpujarra, nearby the pass of La Ragua, the only connection between the north and south faces of Sierra Nevada. It shares the typical features of all Alpujarra villages, i.e. a distinctive type of architecture in the buildings, adapted to the structure of the irregular land and to the climate of the area, which are arranged in narrow streets where the memory lingers in its Moorish past.
