Paths and trails through the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche

If you enjoy nature and hiking, the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche if the place for you. 600 kilometres of trails. One of the largest network of footpaths in Andalusia through luxuriant forests, spectacular pastureland with holm-oaks, cork and gall-oak, as well as groves of poplar and elm or forests of chestnut and pine. Over 180000 acres of land bathed by several tributaries of the Guadalquivir and the Guadiana accompany many of these trails in the form of small waterfalls and a rain index which keeps all of the mountains and the forests that inundate it very green.

With this type of view it's no surprise that one says that in the Sierra de Aracena you can walk to almost anywhere. Round-trip trails, trails which connect almost every village to each other and my favourites, the circular trails, which let you walk on new paths without ever crossing the same one.

One of the most beautiful trails in the Sierra de Aracena

After years of hiking in the Sierra de Aracena and after comparing opinions from locals and regulars of the many trails on the mountains, I dare say that one of the most beautiful and representative trails in the Sierra de Aracena is the circular 18 kilometre trail that links the towns of Fuenteheridos century, Galaroza and The Castaño del Robledo .

The latter is one of the highest towns in the mountains and until we reach the village the Múrtiga river accompanies us. 

A perfect plan

Given the proximity of the area, one of the 10 recommendations that we can give you is that before starting the trip pick up good meats and Jabugo from the area. Believe me, you won't find the prices and quality you find in this area anywhere else. With a loaded backpack, artisan bread and a bag for waste, I suggest you choose a corner like the one in the photograph and enjoy a movie-style picnic.

And remember, areas like these are preserved thanks to everyone's work. Do not leave anything that does not come from nature in areas like this. Take a small plastic bag to store small packages and waste. The next people on the trail and nature itself will thank you for it.
