Monasterio de Santa María de la Rábida
Also known as the La Rábida Monastery, this Franciscan monastery of Gothic-Mudejar style was erected in the 14th and 15th centuries. It was declared a National Monument in 1856.
Its extension covers about 2000 square metres, with an irregular floor plan. Over the years, it has undergone several modifications, especially after the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. Christopher Columbus stayed here before departing for the New World, when he was still preparing his project, and here is buried Martín Alonso Pinzón, who died just a few days after returning from Columbus' first trip. Likewise, upon the return of some of the conquest expeditions, Hernán Cortés, Gonzalo de Sandoval and Francisco Pizarro arrived here.
For all of these reasons, the Santa María de La Rábida Monastery assumes a significant role in famous historic-artistic itinerary known as “The Columbian Sites”.
