Route around Pagos de Huertas: La Barqueta and Pedro Díaz
The Route around Pagos de Huertas: La Barqueta and Pedro Díaz starts at km. 2 of the CO-V-1321 road, in the vicinity of Palma del Río and at the junction with the CO-A-1372. After passing La Herradura Equestrian Centre, on your right you will see the beginning of the route to El Pago de la Barqueta. At the start of the trail you will find a general plan of the walk. As you head down the trail, you will see two meanders of the Genil River, the first of which offers a magnificent view of El Pago del Rincón on the opposite riverbank. A little further down on the bank you will have a great view of El Pago de la Pimentada and an old port with a waterwheel. From here, you can enjoy an excellent view of El Pago de La Barqueta. This area has kept its name since 1342 and it occupies the entire meander of the river.
Continuing along the path, you will travel between orange trees along the old trail towards El Pago de Pedro Díaz. On the terraces formed by the country lands in contact with the Genil Valley, you can appreciate plants of interest, such as European fan palms, asparagus ferns, wild pomegranates, olive trees and white mulberries. The fauna is equally rich: sometimes you can see hares, rabbits and foxes. Furthermore, spectacular birds often fly overhead, including the European bee-eater, heron, European greenfinch, European goldfinch and blackbird.
During its last section, the dirt path runs parallel to the old irrigation channel of El Judío Dam. When you reach the CO-V-1321 you will come across a roundabout before continuing towards El Pago de Pedro Díaz. On the verge of the trail you will see a sign that indicates the path towards the shrine. Take this turn-off to walk among orange trees and reach Pedro Díaz Chapel, which was built in 1860.
The route continues along a path between orange trees and the banks of the Genil River until the turn-off for the "motores del Saetilla", which then joins a road to El Pago de la Graja. Finally, this area can be crossed to reach the end point of the trail before turning back along the same path or road to the starting point.
