Puerta del Sol
Located in Palma del Río, the Puerta del Sol is the main access point to the Walled Area of the city. This site was reached using two gates, one of which is this one, the Eastern Gate, while the other was the Northern Gate, also known as Torre Capilla de las Angustias. Above the gateway is the balcony of Palacio de los Portocarrero.
The gateway has a side opening that was constructed during the Almohad period as a defensive strategy called "curved entry". Thus, if the enemy tried to access the enclosure they were attacked from the tower, the wall and above the gateway. A defensive element that was developed in the years of Almohad reign can also be discerned: a gatehouse, with a mechanism that enabled defenders to be protected while they poured boiling oil or any other emphatic weapon on the attackers
The dome that closes the entryway is ribbed with a series of arches that unite in the centre of the vault, the key.
Free access without charge.
