Hospital de San Sebastián
Although San Sebastián Hospital in Palma del Río began work at the beginning of the 15th century, the original Papal Bull pertains to Pope Julius II, granted in Rome on 5 September 1508. The first ordinances established the co-patronage of the hostpital between the Counts of Palma and the Town Council. From 1942, the Salesian Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus have been responsible for the hospital.
The hospital is a complex building that has evolved with different constructions of varying styles. The church is a typical Mudéjar structure with a single nave and square chancel separated by a grand, ornate semi-circular triumphal arch. The altar of the church leads to Jesús Nazareno Chapel, which has a cross, plinth and silver lights.
However, it is the beautiful landscaped cloister courtyard with two bodies of semi-circular brick arches that attracts visitors' attention. You can see that the gallery is a construction of low arches, indicating its old nature. The columns of white marble and the height of the galleries afford them a unique slenderness and solemnity where time passes between the murmur of the fountain and the dialogue of residents, as the old building coexists today with a modern home for old people.
