Route of the Woolly Rhinoceros
The Route of the Woolly Rhinoceros (9.2km) is a bit longer than the Route of the Mammoth (8.26km) but shorter than the Route of the Sabre-toothed Cat (10 km). They are all part of the Prehistoric Routes in the municipality of Padul, in the area surrounding the lake.
You should begin the route at Jardines de la Estación gardens, next to Padul Town Hall, where there is a large area to park the car. A series of monoliths with the three prehistoric animals lead you to the path you want.
After about 2 km you get to the first recommended stop on this route – Padul Iberian-Roman Road, the best-preserved remains of a Roman road, which was used from protohistoric times to medieval times. On the route there are also several hides which are ideal for observing the birds that come to Padul Lake, first thing in the morning.
This route takes you through the most beautiful spots of the Padul plain, and joins the wooden path, which is an easy path that takes you round the lake to El Aguadero Nature Centre. This centre offers information on local flora and fauna and there are workshops and activities for the little ones. One of the most popular and interesting workshops is bird ringing (by prior appointment and for groups).
