Fuente de los Cinco Caños
Located in the district of Padul, the Fuente de los Cinco Caños or the Laundry (16th-19th centuries) is also known as the Fountain of San Joaquín and the Laundry of Santa Ana. In 1897 the Town Council built the laundry and put a roof over the cistern. From this time until the second half of the 20th century it became the heart of the village.
The monument consists of two sections: the square building covering the source and the cistern, and another rectangular section which is the laundry.
The Laundry was a place of continuous hustle and bustle. public gossip mill and meeting place for workers who came at dusk to find work for the next day. But it was also an ideal place for making friends or finding a girlfriend, taking advantage of the time when the village girls appeared with jugs and pitchers to fetch water or wash clothes.
This laundry was so busy that mothers used to send their children really early to keep their place in the queue, otherwise there wouldn't be a place for them when they came to wash the clothes. When running water was installed in private this place lost its predominant position as a public meeting place.
It wasn't only the older people who came to this place, it was also enjoyed by girls and boys who use to play in the water and sing the songs which were popular at the time. They often arrived home soaked to the skin to secretly change their clothes without their mother seeing them and hurry out again to carry on playing.
Nowadays, this incomparable area and its surroundings are used for different cultural events: concerts on summer nights, children's evenings, etc.
