Casa Castillo de los Conde del Padul

Located in the district of Padul, the popular Casa Castillo de los Conde del Padul is a civil-style palace built over the ruins of a fortress. It is popularly known as “La Casa Grande” (the Big House) and it is located right in the centre of the district.

In 1981 it was declared to be of Cultural Interest.

The building is located inside a large, almost square area, surrounded by a wall. It is in a very severe Baroque architectural style, with no decorative features. The attraction of the building lies in its elegant proportions, and in the grace and elegance of the pointed crenellations.

One of its most interesting features deserving special mention, is that this building is one of the few and rare “Palacios de Asiento” that are preserved in the province of Granada. The "Palacios de Asiento" are those that had seats located at the entrance, which means that they gave help to the poor who came to ask for food and compassion.

This palace has witnessed some of the most important battles which have taken place in the district. It also has been protected by the most valiant lords who have been its owners.
