Outdoor activities with your pet in Malaga
Immerse yourself in sub-tropical plants or in the nineteenth-century city. Camp at naturist accommodation. Discover Marbella's natural surroundings. Spy the flamingos of Fuente de Piedra. With your pet.
Pets permitted. This simple sentence is vital for those who enjoy active tourism… Without ever forgetting about their faithful friend when planning a holiday or trip away. If you are thinking of visiting the Costa del Sol, you will need to make a list of places where you can travel with your pet in Malaga and then enjoy outdoor activities. The city of Malaga currently has an impressive variety of museums - the majority of which have been recently opened - but there are two beautiful spots you really must visit: La Concepción Botanic Garden and Inglés Cemetery. Visiting them both in the company of your pet is possible, since both places are pet-friendly and, as outdoor activities, they are very attractive options due to their historical significance.
Malaga: La Concepción Botanic Garden and Inglés Cemetery
La Concepción, which dates back to 1855, holds over 3,000 plant species and has boasted the title of "historic-artistic garden" since 1943. Its collection of subtropical flora and the English landscape layout, with its streams, greenhouses and old palms, make this creation of the Marquises of Casa Loring (Jorge Loring Oyarzábal and Amalia Heredia Livermore) an area of exceptional beauty. Visiting with your pet is permitted, providing your furry friend is identified, on a lead and up-to-date with vaccinations.
Meanwhile, the Cemetery, which houses the Anglican church of St. George, the first protestant graveyard in Spain - its construction was ordered by the British consul, William Mark, in 1830 - and it is famous for welcoming canine friends. As such, in good company you can discover this architectural jewel of Romanticism. It is the final resting place of outstanding figures like the liberal hero, Robert Boyd (executed in 1831 along with General Torrijos on the beaches of San Andrés), and the writers, Jorge Guillén, Gamel Woolsey and Gerald Brenan.
On the Malaga coast
Heading along the coast, the options for travelling with dogs, if you enjoy camping, increases with places like Cabopino, Laguna Playa and Almanat Naturista - in Marbella, Torre del Mar and Almayate, respectively. In the case of the last two, they are even more suitable given their proximity to the mouth of the Totalán stream, where you will find one of the Province of Malaga's dog beaches. Fuerte de Nagüeles, the green lung of Marbella, is a stunning Mediterranean pine grove that has boasted a park open to pets since summer 2013.
Inland in the province: Fuente de Piedra
Fuente de Piedra is a must-see natural space in Malaga. Here, you will find Laguna de Fuente de Piedra, a nature reserve that owes its international fame to the colony of Iberian flamingos that flock here in spring: mating season for this slim bird. Both José Antonio Valverde Visitor Centre and the nature reserve itself can be visited with dogs (for the Visitor Centre, this will depend on the number of people, which will determine whether it is suitable for dogs to enter or not; trails can be freely accessed). The campsite named after the local wetland - which is one of the largest in Spain - is happy to welcome the pets of tourists camping there.
