Meandro de Montoro
In its middle section, the Guadalquivir river embraces the Cordoba farmhouse of Montoro, giving rise to the Meandro de Montoro Natural Monument. It is the southern entrance to the Sierra de Cardeña and Montoro Nature Reserve.
As it passes through the town of Montoro and for nearly 5 kilometres, the Guadalquivir river flows forming a very curved meander, encased in the old materials of the foothills of the Sierra Morena. It is one of the most spectacular examples on the entire Peninsula.
Among vegetable gardens, we can note the presence of a riverbank vegetation, with nettle trees and poplars, and typical birds of these environments.
In addition to the natural wealth of the water channel, the area holds an important monumental heritage, both in the town of Montoro and the river. Examples are the neighbourhood of Retamar, the Donadas bridge, which it crosses, and the large number of ethnographic resources registered in the Historic Heritage Catalogue, such as the mills of San Martín, La Huerta, Las Monjas y Las Aceñuelas; the Aceña del Cascajar; the Fuente de la Oliva and the Batán de Batanejo.
