Europeo Peloponeso - Tarifa Trail - GR-7, E-4
The GR 7 long-distance walking trail, part of the E-4 European long-distance path, is the longest in Europe. It starts at the Delfos temple in Greece and finishes in Tarifa, a province of Cadiz. It has currently become the first intercontinental trail. It has been extended on both sides and has inaugurated the first kilometres in Cyprus. On the Africa side, it joins the A-1, which starts in Ceuta crossing North Africa and goes inland as far as the Sahara.
It goes into Andalusia through La Puebla de Don Fadrique, a municipality in Granada, and in front of the stunning views of the Sierra de la Sagra, it branches off into two paths: Northern Path and Southern Path. It connects towns in the provinces of Jaén, Cordoba, Granada, Almeria, Malaga and Cadiz, with 1,280 kilometres of a signposted trail going through ten natural parks.
Northern Path: goes into the largest protected area of the Iberian Peninsula, the Nature Reserve of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas, through the municipalities of Cazorla and Quesada, with beautiful valleys where the Guadalquivir starts. The highest hill in the province of Jaén is in the Sierra Mágina Nature Reserve, the Mágina peak. After reaching the district of Alcalá la Real, with its impressive fortress La Mota castle, it goes into the province of Cordoba, where our path goes all around the Sierras Subbéticas Nature Reserve, in the south of Cordoba, with its great scenic and environmental wealth, and it reaches Almedinilla, with remains of an important Roman villa and an Iberian necropolis. Then it goes to the capital of Andalusian Baroque, thePriego of Cordoba, exploring as far as Rute, where the Anís museum is a must for sampling its sweets. Then it leaves the province of Cordoba and enters Malaga, going round the “"Llanos de Antequera"” plains to the village of Villanueva del Cauche (Antequera) where it joins the other path.
Southern Path: from La Puebla de Don Fadrique it goes in the direction of Huéscar, reaching Galera and Orce, municipalities with important prehistoric remains. It goes through Zújar, with thermal baths, before reaching Baza. Then we go to the highest peaks of the Sierra de Baza Nature Reserve to descend to Marquesado del Zenete. After passing through the municipalities of La Calahorra, with the first Renaissance castle of Andalusia, and Ferreira, it goes into the Sierra Nevada Nature Reserve until it reaches the Fondo Puerto de la Ragua ski and recreation resort, in the territorial limits of Granada and Almeria. It goes through la Alpujarra Granadina, all exceptionally beautiful with towns offering popular architecture, local crafts and gastronomy; the Lecrín Valley, with many orange trees and irrigation channels, and it continues through various municipalities to reach the region of Alhama, set between enormous rock bands that form real natural walls, at the foot of theSierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Nature Reserve as far as Boquete de Zafarraya, where we leave the province of Granada and enter Malaga. With views of the Mediterranean, Montes de Málaga Nature Reserve and Torcal de Antequera Nature Reserve, we go into Axarquía until we reach Villanueva del Cauche (Antequera), where we join the other path.
After the two paths join, the GR 7 walking trail ascends until it reaches the vicinity of the Torcal de Antequera Nature Site, where it descends to Torcal de Antequera. It continues on and goes into the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Nature Site, in El Chorro. The Trail goes as far as Ronda and continues through the province of Cadiz, where the contrast of landscapes in the parks that we cross will surprise us, Grazalema N.P, Alcornocales N.P., Estrecho N.P., through to the municipality of Tarifa, where the Trail ends.
