This is a Renaissance and Baroque style building, built at the end of the 15th century by Pedro Portocarrero and Juana de Cárdenas, when the primitive convent of Corpus Christi became too small. The Franciscans settled here from 1482 to 1836, where the cloister and the church stand out.
The church, rebuilt after the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. Today it is home to the brotherhood of La Borriquita and Cristo de los Remedios.
The convent of San Francisco is also of enormous historical value, as numerous Franciscan expeditions left from its cells to evangelise the New World.
The building is currently home to the Municipal Historical Archive and the Ibero-American Library.
