Declared a National Monument in 1949, it is a military construction from the 14th century, built on the remains of a Roman villa from the Lower Empire, later a farmhouse during the Almohad period. Until 1600 it was the residence of the Lord of Moguer, Pedro Portocarrero, who participated in the financing of the Second Columbian Voyage; his page and squire, Vasco Núñez de Balboa, was the discoverer of the Pacific Ocean.

Today, one of its four towers is preserved, as well as an interesting rectangular cistern with two naves covered with a barrel vault over semicircular arches.
