Jardín Botánico Detunda - Cuevas de Nerja
In the town of Maro, next to the Caves of Nerja and within Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, you will find Detunda-Cueva de Nerja Botanic Garden, which shelters an interesting representation of local flora and vegetation that is distributed around the mountains of Malaga and Granada, from the Montes de Málaga to the Sierra de Huétor and the Sierra de Arana in a corridor known for a high level of plant biodiversity and a high number of endemic species.
The territory and its plants form a space of great beauty, halfway between the mountains and the coast, with complicated terrain and large geological variety that, together with its unique climate, create great ecological diversity.
Its plants have adapted to long periods of summer drought and even to relatively frequent fires. The Botanic Garden is structured in four parts: Traditional Crops, Vegetation Associated with the Climate, Vegetation Associated with Special Soils, Collections. While the first two collect a representation of the natural plant communities present in the biogeographical sector of Malacitano-Almijarense, the Collections feature species isolated from their natural habitat.
There are three collections: bulbs, orchids and an extensive collection of rare, endemic and endangered species present in this biogeographical area.
