Mantecados and hojaldrinas from Arjona and Alcaudete
Christmas sweets from Arjona come in many varieties, from the traditional hojacampos to roscos de anís. There is also a kosher-certified Sephardic recipe. The hojaldrinas, made in Alcaudete with the juice of fresh oranges and the aroma of wine, are known throughout Spain. A visit to the castle of Alcaudete and to the museum of Popular Arts and Customs in Arjona are other attractions of the area.
In Arjona you can find a tasty sweet called "hojacampos", which is a puff pastry covered in icing sugar. Several interesting varieties have been created over time: covered in chocolate, with almonds or filled with cream.
Made by Productos Campos, a family business specialising in other products such as Christmas sweets – "mantecados" and "polvorones" – and also their main speciality, the so-called Sephardic sweet. This delicacy, recovered from a medieval 14th-century recipe, was granted a kosher certificate in 2013 by the Rabbinate of Madrid.
Two municipalities steeped in history
A visit to both municipalities not only offers us the chance to taste their delicious sweets, but also to see their streets, squares and monuments, places that are several centuries old, where ancient civilisations left their imprint.
Among countless monuments, it is worth mentioning Calatravo Castle, the most important and representative monument of Alcaudete. Built between the 12th and 15th centuries, it is perched atop a hill from where you can see the entire city. Another interesting place to visit is the Juan Eslava Galán Museum of Arts and Popular Customs, named after the Arjona writer and Planeta Award winner. An exhibition on the culture of Arjona where visitors will find a collection of ethnographic items.
