The April Fair, declared of National Tourist Interest, is one of the most relevant hallmarks of Mairena del Alcor. The first and oldest of Andalusia's fairs, it was founded in 1441 through a grant from King John II of Castile to Pedro Ponce de León, the lord of Mairena.
There are abundant testimonies in texts by different writers and researchers who her have dedicated their efforts to studying the importance, scope and age of our fair, like Washington Irving, Serafín Estébanez Calderón, Jorge Bonsor…
The Mairena Fair achieved its maximum splendour in the 19th century, serving as the model for the April Fair of Seville. Currently it is held the week before the Seville fair, thereby inaugurating the fair season in lower Andalusia.
