Mairena del Aljarafe
Municipality of the Aljarafe located near the city of Seville which in the past few years has become a residential AREA for people fleeing from the bustle of the city. Its most important monument is the Church of San Ildefonso.
History
The first known settlements date back to the Roman domination, as evidenced by the archaeological sites discovered in the AREA.Until the period of Al-Andalus it was most likely uninhabited and was used by shepherds, which might explain the name it had at the time Maharana, which means "shepherd"s hut".
Following the Christian conquest it belonged to the Alvarez de Toledo family and to the counts of Cartaojal until the abolition of feudal domains in the first half of the 19th century, when it became an independent municipality.
