Mairena together with Laroles, Picena and the hamlet of Júbar form a part of the municipality of Nevada. It is located on the eastern threshold of the Upper Alpujarra, nearby the pass of La Ragua, the only connection between the north and south faces of Sierra Nevada. It shares the typical features of all Alpujarra villages: a unique architecture in their homes, perfectly adapted to the broken terrain and climate of the area, which are arranged in narrow streets where the memory lingers in its Moorish past.

As part of its territory of the Natural Park of Sierra Nevada, where stand the highest peaks in the Spanish territory, is ideal for long walks in these splendid surroundings.
