The Source of the Río Frío is in beautiful surroundings in the municipality of Los Villares, in the north of the Sierra Sur de Jaén. It is next to the road leading to Valdepeñas de Jaén, about 7 km from Los Villares and more than a thousand meters above sea level.
The vegetation is really lush and it is the catchment area for water draining from the Sierra de la Pandera. The crystal-clear water is icy cold, hence the name of the river.
The spring has not been known to be without water within living memory and it pours out of 8 spectacular pipes called the "Ojos del Moral". In winter, there is so much water that it overflows, forming a small but pretty waterfall between the footbridge and the rocks.
The beauty and unique nature of the area is such that it has been classified as a Place of Ethnological Interest and has been included in the Andalusia Catalogue of Historical Heritage. Due to the magical, almost esoteric character of the place, it has been included in the Sierra Sur Route of the Miracles.
