Villares, Los
This little vilage is situated in the midst of the Sierra de Jaen Mountains, on the banks of the Frio River, to the south of the capital. It is surrounded by olive groves and is famous for its wicker handycrafts. The Loma de las Cimbres, from where you can see the Castle of Santa Catalina in Jaen, is near the village.
History
The origin of the village, according to Espinal, comes from the union of several farmhouses and little hamlets during the 16th century (1540) under the name of Los Villares.During Roman times, a battle between Romans and Carthaginians took place in a place called Cueva del Contadero, within its municipal district.
It belonged to Jaen"s jurisdiction until it became a Royal Village in 1600.
During the War of Independence, the guerrilla Pedro Alcalde helped the Spanish troops defeat the French when he stole their horses.
