The Chapel of San Roque was built at the beginning of the 17th century to the south of Loja at the foot of the mountains, in a place relating to the epidemic in 1600, as those who died were buried in this area and the chapel was used as a hospital for those infected.
The chapel is similar in style to others in Loja, with a vaulted roof and a gabled bell tower.
The interior of the Chapel of San Roque is still undergoing restoration from the great damage caused during the Civil War, and the images that reside inside, the Expectation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Jesus Weeping on the Mount of Olives and the Apostolate, go out on procession on Easter Tuesday. The image of San Roque, that resides in the main niche, goes out on procession in mid-august during the festivities in his honour that take place in the Alto de Loja neighbourhood.
