Linares, capital of the northern countryside of the ancient Kingdom of Jaen, is in an area of the southern Spain flanked by Sierra Morena to the northeast and the Loma de Úbeda to the east.

Within the municipality bordering Oretania lies Castulo, the homeland of Himilce, wife of Carthaginian general Hannibal, which was founded around the 6th century BC, and is also where Publius Cornelius Scipio lost his troops and his life.
