Museo de La Carolina

In the north of the province of Jaén, in the town of La Carolina, the capital of the "New Towns of Sierra Morena", La Carolina Museum is situated in the majestic building of the Palace of Intendente Olavide, where there is lots to learn about the town's culture, history and research.

The building that houses La Carolina Museum boasts cutting-edge technology, excellent infrastructure and a human team that makes it a cultural and tourist resource that shouldn't be missed when visiting the town.

The current museum was opened in 2011, replacing the Archaeological Museum of La Carolina and continuing with its work to gather, preserve, explore and share the history and cultural heritage and testimony of the communities that have lived and left their imprint in this area, a land that is connected to mining and the mountain pass of Despeñaperros.

Thanks to an important and exceptional collection of all kinds of objects, as well as carefully-made museographic and multimedia resources, visitors can discover the physical features of this area and the peculiarities of the natural surroundings. They can also see a timeline of its history, from the first traces of human remains from the Palaeolithic until almost the present day. Important periods are highlighted, like Spanish-Roman mining, the period of the creation and development of the New Towns as a colonising project by Charles III and the intensive contemporary mining that ended at the end of the last century. All these periods have left an imprint that can be discovered in the collective memory of the local people.

La Carolina Museum also organises a wide range of temporary exhibitions and activities, both at the museum and in other parts of the area.
