La Cañada Golf: where you don't play golf, you breathe it
In the heart of the Guadiaro River Valley, beside the Mediterranean and the Sotogrande urbanisation you'll find a stronghold where golf is much more than a sport: La Cañada Golf Club.
Since its foundation in 1982 as a Golf Club without a course, and since 1990 with an 9 hole course extended to the current 18 holes, it has been the epicentre of popular golf. The club was founded by several old caddies from the RCG Sotogrande and it is a perfect example of practising sport while tearing down old myths. Since its creation, Golf in Guadiaro has been a clear example that it is much more than a sport.
These 18 holes and the municipal school have witnessed the development of many of today's great names in Spanish professional golf. Álvaro Quirós, María Parra and Galiano Mario hit their first balls in this club in San Roque. The course was designed by Robert T. Jones, one of the most famous designers in the world, which means you'll have to think carefully about each shot if you want to make a good score.
One of the holes where strategy is an all-important factor is the 18th. This par 4 has an unusual design in which from the tee you'll need to overcome a steep slope marked by a "Cañada Real" (historic herding trail) that crosses this estate and which gives its name to the club. And when you reach the green, watch out for the dips and hollows. Your putter will need to be in good form if you want to get a good score on this Cadiz course.
What stands out is that this club has a distinctly friendly atmosphere. The over a thousand members, four hundred students of the municipal school and the numerous visiting players all feel the same when they leave: The atmosphere in La Cañada makes you feel at home, surrounded by friends and always with incredible views.
And if you want to give free reign your palate, what better way than to sit on one of the club's terraces where you can enjoy some of the best cuisine in the area. Without forgetting the stunning sunset. In Guadiaro you'll do much more than play a round of golf, you'll experience and feel golf in a different way.
