Lagunas de las Canteras y el Tejón
Located in the municipality of Jerez de la Frontera, northwest of the Bay of Cadiz and south of Laguna de Medina Lake, lies the small and shallow Lagunas de las Canteras y el Tejón Nature Reserve and lakes. They mainly get water from the rain, which means that they are seasonal and can dry up in summer.
Being a stop-off point and a wintering and nesting site for many birds, it has been designated as a Special Bird Protection Area. These include white-headed ducks, moorhens, coots and common snipes.
The vegetation in the area is typical of wetlands, including reeds, tamarisks, reed mace, bulrushes and rushes. Further away from the shore there are dry crops, interspersed with redoubts of typically Mediterranean vegetation and small reforestation sites with eucalyptuses. However, the main botanical feature is the water vegetation that can be found at certain times of year, as well as algae, which grows in the basin.
