Royal Convent of Santa Clara
The Royal Convent of Santa Clara, in the Gothic-Mudejar, Renaissance and Baroque styles, is thought to be the oldest convent in the city. It was built between the 13th and 18th centuries, and in 1979 it was granted the historical architectural monument designation. Ancient synagogue.
The church has a rectangular nave covered by handsome Mudejar coffering. There are two choirs, a raised one and a lower one, covered by an exquisite coffered ceiling, the oldest in the church. Inside the church stands a statue of the Santísimo Cristo de las Misericordias, an anonymous sculpture from the 16th century. Another remarkable feature of the church is the elegant cloister, which has a garden at its centre distinguished by a tall cypress tree.
The remainder of the interior is closed off to the public as it is given over to the living quarters of a community of cloistered nuns. The sweets and pastries made by the nuns can be purchased through the convent turnstile.
