On 2 July 2009 the Legend of the Magdalena Lizard was officially recognised as one of the ten treasures of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Spain, prompting Jaén city council to declare that day "Magdalena Lizard Day".
Every year, the council organises a varied programme of activities to animate the streets of the city in the days leading up to the celebration on the great day itself when ten groups comprising more than 200 people and numerous surprises take part in a parade through the historic centre to commemorate the official Magdalena Lizard Day, celebrated every 2 July.
