Provincial Palace Jaén
The Provincial Palace is the main work of civic architecture in the city of Jaén and it houses the headquarters of the Provincial Council.
The first stop on entering the building is the courtyard. Here the light is condensed and filters through the gallery openings, inundating the adjacent spaces with great vitality. The courtyard is surrounded by balustraded columns and carpeted with gardens, and at its centre stands a fountain with a statue of the Virgin Mary. This sculptural ensemble originally belonged to the Dominicos de la Guardia monastery, who donated it to adorn the courtyard in the Museo Provincial.
The rooms situated on the first floor include the Provincial President's office and the Hall of Illustrious Figures, on whose walls hang the portraits of former council presidents as witnesses of time passing. The balcony of this room offers a privileged vantage point from which to admire the Catedral.
Situated on the second floor is the Plenary Hall, the heart of local democracy in the province. The Plenary Hall or Hall of Sessions owes its harmonious decorative repertoire to the architect Justino Flórez Llamas. Its style recovers Mannerist historical trends.
