Located in the unpopulated area of the same name, in the municipality of Jabalquinto, the Moorish castle of Estivel or "Las Huelgas" stands on a promontory that controls the Guadiel and Guadalquivir rivers, as well as the passes and fords across the "Río Grande". It has been occupied since the Bronze Age, it was once the site of an Iberian oppidum and a setting during the Second Punic War.
It was donated by King Fernando III to the city of Baeza (1243), and a century later the city awarded it to Día Sánchez de Biedma, the King's representative (Justicia Mayor) on the condition that it should not be sold unless absolutely necessary and it should be used to house the poor people of Baeza.
What remains of the original Almohad building is the keep, parts of the walls and a water cistern, all built out of masonry or "tabiyya". Right opposite, on the other side of the river, there is the renowned Arch of Janus, which marked the beginning of the Baetica province in Roman times.
