The Chapel de la Antigua or Sanctuary de la Piedad is located in the municipality of Iznájar, and has a beautiful panoramic view of the so-called ‘Lago de Andalucía’. The sanctuary consists of a vaulted nave and a splendid baroque niche that closes at the head.
The building is home to the patron saint, the Virgen de la Piedad, the most interesting and oldest image in Iznájar, dating back to the mid-15th century and attributed to a disciple of Lorenzo de Mercader.
The chapel also has artistic baroque altarpieces and interesting images from the 17th and 18th centuries, from the Granada school. This is the case of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno.
Every year on 8 September the festivity of La Natividad de Nuestra Señora is celebrated in the Chapel de la Antigua or Sanctuary de la Piedad. The pilgrimage is attended by thousands of devotees from all over the region and from neighbouring towns in the province of Granada, who accompany the image on its journey through the streets of the town. There are still people who do it barefoot and others who carry a number of large candles, this is because in the past devotees kept their promises by making a gift to Nuestra Señora of their weight in wax.
