Islantilla, host for the Blue Flag awards ceremony in Andalusia
On 21 June, the town of Islantilla, in Huelva, is hosting theofficial Blue Flagawards ceremony, in which 148 awards will be given out this year to beaches, marinas and sustainable tourist boats in Andalusia.
This year, Andalusia has received a record number of Blue Flag awards that recognise environmental quality and sustainable tourism. The awards ceremony will take place at the Puerto Antilla Grand Hotel and will be attended by tourism authorities and representatives of the award-winning towns.
According to the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Arturo Bernal, they chose Islantilla to host this event because of its commitment to the preservation of its coastline and beaches. Bernal highlighted that "Tourists are valuing sustainability more and more, and Huelva and Andalusia are an example of this".
The Vice-Chair of the Islantilla Association of Municipalities and Deputy Mayor of Lepe, Mariana Otero, said she was pleased Islantilla had been selected for the event, as it recognises the destination's commitment to excellence and sustainable management.
Francisco Zamudio, First Deputy Mayor of Isla Cristina, has highlighted the pioneering role of Islantilla in obtaining sustainable tourism quality badges such as Blue Flags, Q for Quality and EcoPlayas.
148 Blue Flags in Andalusia, 127 are for beaches. Malaga is top of the list with 39, followed by Almería with 32 and Cadiz with 31. Huelva has been awarded 12 flags for beaches such as Islantilla, Isla Cristina, Lepe, Ayamonte, Cartaya and Punta Umbría. This programme promotes tourism that is committed to the preservation of the Andalusian coastline.
