Both visitors and the people of Isla Cristina actively participate in the Carnival, in troupes, a cavalcade, contests and dances.
It is celebrated 40 days before Easter, and the traditional "Entierro de la Sardina" (Burial of the Sardine) coincides with Ash Wednesday.
It lasts at least 21 days from the proclamation of Carnival to "Piñata" Sunday.
