Unión Salazonera Isleña, S.A. (Usisa) is an Andalusian company that has been dedicated to an age-old tradition for more than 40 years: the traditional production of salted and preserved fish. At our factory, situated inn Isla Cristina (Huelva, Spain), each year we process over 12,000 tons of fish under the brands Tejero, Usisa and El Decano.

Huelva "is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Huelva is formed by its towns and traditions, and a perfect example of this is the age-old fishing and canning culture in Isla Cristina, of which Unión Salazonera Isleña forms a part. Usisa collaborates with "Huelva Marinera", meaning our offer of tours with Manuela Pomares constitute a part of the Huelva marine tourism experiences available.

Huelva Marinera allows visitors to discover how some of the world's best preserved and salted fish is prepared and classified under three Protected Denominations of Origin: frigate tuna (melva) and mackerel from Andalusia, as well as mojama from Isla Cristina.

The tour lasts an hour and a half and is divided into three activities:

Usisa's History. The first part of the tour takes place in an audiovisual room where you will learn about the progress of the company and come into contact for the first time with the production process and the art of tuna "ronqueo" (cutting).

Fish Handling Room. At this point, you will discover in situ the traditional methods and natural techniques used in the production of our preserves (mainly mackerel and frigate tuna). Visitors are usually amazed by the skill and care our employees show our ingredients.

Cutting Zone. To finish, visitors will experience the production process for the famous mojama tuna from Isla Cristina. This means being able to enjoy the manual cutting or "ronqueo" of the fish.

We are committed to the environment and sustainable development.

Groups will be of between 4 and 25 people. Use comfortable, closed-toe footwear without heels to avoid falling. When moving around the factory you must wear clothing required by law (PPE), which will be provided before the tour begins. Please book at least 3 days in advance. Tours are available on Mondays and Thursdays in the morning: 11am to 12.30pm (contact us for other options). Videos with English subtitles are available to explain the history of Usisa. Tour price: €13/person (the price per person may vary depending on the size of the group and if transport is required or not).
