Museo Etnográfico de Huércal-Overa
The Huércal-Overa Ethnographic Museum aims to explain the history of the town of Huércal-Overa, told through old and everyday objects and belongings. This ethnographic museum offers an active form by which the new generations may learn about their roots. Its present and future can neither be understood nor explained without knowing its past.
Ezequiel Parra, together with neighbours and friends, is one of the creators of this museum, which aims to recover old objects, customs and traditions, to keep them from disappearing. Its objective: to explain to future generations how their ancestors lived, then, as Ezequiel Parra himself says, "there is nothing more beautiful than explaining our children the content and value of our history through restored objects.
Thanks to the work, effort and collaboration of many people, part of the objects of the ancestors of Huércal-Overa have been recovered, for the purpose of making the life of previous generations known to its children and grandchildren. It has been created for the pleasure and enjoyment of all visitors, especially children and adults, to which we owe much gratitude.
The Museum, inaugurated in 2013, has two areas. An outdoor area for contemplating a range of ploughs, farm tools and objects used in agricultural tasks; and an indoor area comprised of a floor measuring about 150 metres. It is divided into themed sections, amongst others, you can visit and remember how they were once before: the neighbourhood shop, butcher shop, bakery, Huércal-Overa stamps, postcards and pennants, library, kitchen, school, ice-cream from their childhood, music, agricultural tools, telephones, irons using coal, typewriters, dining room of the house, bedroom, barber shop, tobacco shop, children's games and toys, electricity, etc.
All of this has been made possible thanks to the contributions of neighbours, family and friends, for people wishing to remember yesteryear.
