Cueva Museo - Centro de Interpretación Cuevas de Guadix
In the heart of Barrio de las Cuevas district in Guadix, in Plaza Padre Poveda, popularly known as Plaza de la Ermita Nueva, the old Cave-Museum, now Guadix Caves Visitor Centre, was first designed as an example of a traditional dwelling. Its last inhabitants (the Cruz-Úbeda family) lived there from 1928 until the early 1980s, and today it still preserves its original architecture and distribution.
A clear example of a cave dwelling from the first half of the 20th century, it boasts a large collection of household utensils, typical furniture of a house of that time, traditional clothing, and a large exhibition of crafts that show the wide variety of jobs, agricultural industries, livestock farming and traditions (Cascamorras festival, Dances of Rifa, etc.) in the town of Guadix and the region.
The Guadix Caves Visitor Centre offers visitors a complete view of the origins of cave-dwelling in the world, and focuses on various cave areas in Guadix and the region, with its peculiar features. Sounds, smells, sensations and characters, like Pedro, the “master picador of the caves”, accompany visitors and explain why, how and when these houses were used, and take visitors into a dwelling that is still very much "alive" today.
