Casa del Chapiz
The Casa del Chapiz dates from the 16th century and comprises different buildings, intercommunicated via a plasterwork arch. Its architecture and decoration include both Christian and Muslim elements.
Re-use of arches and columns from older constructions has been documented. Hence it is thought that they originally formed part of the Islamic palace of Dar al-Bayda (The white house)
The Casa del Chapiz takes its name from its owners, the Moriscos (Muslim-Christian converts) Lorenzo El Chapiz and Hernándo López El Ferí. It has been the site of the School of Arab Studies since 1932.
