Alcázar del Genil

This is a 13th-century Almohad palace, built during the al-Muntasir Caliphate, although it was later remodelled by the Nasrid kings. It was a courtesan retreat, with vegetable plots, orchards and gardens, along with a large pond for mock naval battles. Aixa, mother of Boabdil (the last Nasrid king), lived here until the city of Granada was taken by the Catholic Monarchs.
Only one area with a rectangular floor plan remains from the original building. Inside it is decorated with stuccos and tiles similar to those of the Alhambra. The ceiling has latticed coffering and a Mocarab frieze. There are two small alcoves on either side of this room, with access through identical arches. The rooms were restored in the 19th century.
This is now home to the Francisco Ayala Foundation, which complies documentation on the life and work of this thinker and writer from Granada.
