Gorafe
The first thing one can appreciate when entering this small village is the church located on top of a hill.
The municipal area of Gorafe comprises several archaeological sites and 81 megaliths. The Argaric settlement is situated on the Cerro del Culandrillo hill. Ceramic vessels and bronze objects have been found there. The remains of Arab walls and over 300 caves-houses, many of them still inhabited, can be found in and around the town.
In the old town it is worth mentioning the 16th century Mudéjar style church.
History
Probably an Iberian settlement, where abundant Prehistoric remains have been found, from dolmens to sketchy Neolithic paintings.
Since ancient times and during the Middle Ages, it controlled the Levante-Guadalquivir route. Thus, its castle was a strategic spot in the defence of these access points to the kingdom of Granada.
