Druing the period of Al-Andalus it was a farmstead called Genis Lavit.
Alphonso X called it Camero, but the name was never popular. The town was later called Xines, name which eventually became Gines.
From the 14th century on it belonged to the Zúñiga famioy. In the 16th century it passed into the estate of the Guzman family, and was under their jurisdiction until the abolition of feudal domains in the 19th century.
