Located on the outskirts of Galera, on the Granada Plateau, the village of Castellón Alto is one of most representative of the El Argar Early Bronze Age Culture (dating from 1900-1600 B.C.).

The habitat consists of two large interconnected units: a small hillock or spur with three natural terraces where the houses are located, and the adjoining hill. The upper terrace is separated from the rest of the settlement by a perimeter wall, creating a citadel which was home to the elite and which has a very characteristic structure: the cistern or water deposit.

The site features 130 tombs discovered in one of the residential areas. With the exception of children interned in burial urns, all the remains were found in artificial caves carved out of the rock, mostly sealed with large slabs. The magnificent condition of the archaeological remains has provided important knowledge of the natural environment of the period and its economic exploitation: the urban layout of the settlement and daily life there have been reconstructed.
