Vía Verde del Almanzora - Fines Section
Walking through the Comarca del Mármol region
The Guadix-Almendricos railway line (Granada-Murcia) was built to provide quick access to the mineral in the area. Su explotación comenzó entre 1906 y 1907 por varias compañías de capital inglés, hasta que a finales del siglo pasado pasó a manos de capital español. In disuse since 1985, it is now a very accessible and safe route for all kinds of users, without any age limit or physical capacity limit.
The Vía Verde del Almanzora runs along part of the disused Guadix-Almendricos railway line, along the section that runs between the Granada-Almería border and the town of Huércal-Overa. La longitud final de este tramo de Vía Verde del Almanzora será de 35 Km aproximadamente.
The town halls of Serón, Fines, Cantoria and Olula del Río have carried out conditioning projects along the sections of this line that run through their towns. De esta manera, se pretende completar una gran vía verde en el valle del Almanzora, con la idea de crear un vial idóneo para la práctica del cicloturismo y el paseo a pie, apto para todo tipo de usuarios, incluidos los de movilidad reducida.
The Tramo de Fines section is an urban route, where you can appreciate the renovation of the old stone railway bridge in this town, whilst restoring the boulevard. Along the route there are many different marble sculptures, originating from the quarries of the neighbouring villages of Macael and Olula del río which pay tribute to various countries, different cultures and great geniuses such as the poet Federico García Lorca.
Construction began in November 2009, and since then two traffic lanes have been added in the town of Fines heading towards Olula del Río, as well as a wooded promenade with benches, lighting and litter bins, amongst others, to maintain the perfect state of the surroundings.
