Teatro Municipal de Écija
Ecija's Municipal Theatre was built on the site of an earlier 18th-century theatre. It was almost a ruin by the 19th century but was then restored and went through several hands before it was bought by José Sanjuán in 1927, when it became the Sanjuán Theatre.
The building was destroyed by an accidental fire in January 1937, but was rebuilt and opened its doors again in 1940 under the Cabrera Company. Nine years later the “Sanjuán Company was formed, and ran the Theatre until it closed in 1984. After operating as a Disco-Theatre for a brief period, it was bought by the Town Council, which restored and refurbished the building,
which has Art Deco features both inside and outside. The renovation of the Theatre has respected the style of the 1930s in which it was conceived, respecting the interior and exterior design of the building, with its combination of straight and curved forms, even down to the ship-style handrails.
The new Ejica Municipal Theatre is opening its doors on a new phase, offering a varied programme of shows throughout the year.
