Museo Histórico Municipal de Écija
In Écija, the Municipal Museum of History is located in the Benamejí Palace, a magnificent example of Baroque architecture from the 18th century.
The Museum has nine halls of archaeology where treasures of great artistic value are on display. There is an interesting collection of Roman pieces excavated from the Plaza de España, where the highlight is the “Wounded Amazon”, one of the best preserved classical sculptures in the world. Two metres high, there are traces of polychromy preserved on the marble.
On the other hand, we must highlight the large Mosaics Room, an area of 200 m2 containing 6 of the Roman mosaics that appeared during urban excavations.
The set of mosaics from Écija is one of the most important from the Roman West, due to its quality, variety and size. The highlights are mosaics such as the Seasons of the Year, the “Don del vino” and the Triumph of Bacchus from the Plaza de Santiago, which almost have the quality of paintings.
