Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor
In Ecija, a short-distance from Puerta de Osuna on the left bank of the Matadero, we find a shrine dedicated to Santiago (Saint James), the seed for the neighbourhood that developed around it in the 14th and 15th centuries.
In 1450, what is now the church of Santiago el Mayor was raised to the status of a parish church, resulting in the need to start work on a new building. The church is in the Gothic-Mudejar style, with three doorways. It is in the artistic style of Seville Cathedral, with additions during the 17th century, such as the Monteros chapel. Successive alterations extended the site, particularly the new buildings added in the 18th century, including the Sacramental Chapel, cloisters, main doorway and tower.
The church has been declared of Cultural Interest. It is home to an exceptional work of art, the main altarpiece, which is a harmonious composition of paintings and sculptures. The altarpiece is carved in the style of the transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance, with reliefs and sculptures by the circle of Jorge Fernández and 16th century paintings on wood.
