Fiesta de la Candelaria en Dos Torres

In mid-afternoon, the local residents set fire to huge logs to make the bonfire in the centre of the town square, and cook the bacon and the sardines in the embers to be eaten at night.

There is an extensive and varied programme of traditional activities to celebrate the event, featuring candles, folklore, gastronomy, old-fashioned games, free markets, arts and crafts demonstrations and dramatised visits to the historic part of town.

This celebration is linked to the act of purification of the Virgin Mary after the birth of Jesus Christ. The Festival of La Candelaria, as well as celebrating the birth of Jesus, is also to honour the Virgin and to guarantee light in the home all year round.
