Cuadros Oleander Forest and Mágina Terebinth Grove

Adelfal

In the south of the province of Jaén, between limestone mountains and vast olive groves, Sierra Mágina boasts two magnificent wooded areas with great Iberian biodiversity: Cuadros Oleander Forest and Mágina Terebinth Grove The municipality of Bedmar y Garcíez is home to these two magical forests.

Cuadros Oleander Forest ("Adelfal de Cuadros”) is about 2.5 hectares in area and one of the largest oleander forests in Europe. Oleanders typically grow near water, on the banks of rivers and streams. This is why this oleander forest grows next to the River Cuadros, right from the source. A visit is highly recommended during the spring, when you can find flowers of different hues, ranging from pink to white (the latter being less common), dotted along the riverbank.

You can also enjoy a pleasant walk under the shade of the oleanders. The branches of these shrubs intertwine in some parts and create beautiful tunnels. In summer it is the perfect place to find shelter from the sun.

From the path and in the distance, you can see the shrine and the watchtower of Cuadros, which used to be the border control point between the Christian Kingdom and the Nasrid Kingdom. And close to the river, visitors and potholing enthusiasts can explore the so-called "Cueva del Agua” (Water Cave). It is a unique rocky cave, with waterfalls and spectacular formations, shaped by the river over time. They defy human logic, but not geological logic. It is also the starting point for several waymarked trails that climb up to the highest points in the province.

By the way, exploring and analysing the caves has led to many palaeontological discoveries. Be sure not to miss the Paleomágina Centre, in Bedmar. You will be pleasantly surprised!

Just a stone's throw away you can find another formidable plant formation that has taken over the area: Mágina Terebinth Grove ("Cornicabral de Mágina”). Located on the northern slope of the Hill of La Carluca, this terebinth grove is considered to be the largest in Europe. Magical and unique, it is over a thousand hectares in area and is situated between the villages of Cuadros and Albanchez de Mágina.

Terebinth trees can grow up to five metres. In Spanish they are called "cornicabra”, which means "goat's horn”, as the galls that grow from its branches are similar to the horns of this animal. This terebinth grove is unique – there is none so pure and vast as the one in Mágina

Cornicabral

These deciduous shrubs offer an explosion of autumn colours during the last months of the year. Especially dense is the grove located in shady areas of the ravines of Perú and Mosquito. From here you can enjoy a beautiful mountainous panoramic view: Pico Mágina, Prisons, Arnaitín, Serrezuela de Bedmar… Don't miss it, it is truly magical!
