Located in the city of Córdoba, the Church of San José y El Espíritu Santo stands on the left bank of the Guadalquivir river. It is located in the neighbourhood of El Campo de la Verdad, formerly the suburb of Saqunda, and built on a promontory to the left of the old Way of Seville.
The origin of the current church was a small chapel of late mediaeval origin dedicated to La Visitación de Nuestra Señora y Espíritu Santo, which was probably built on the foundations of an Umayyad Mosque (in the interior there are columns made of rubble). The floor plan is shaped like a basilica with three naves, the central nave being broader and higher than the lateral naves and with a tripartite apse and a flat façade. At the foot of this there is an antechamber and, above it, the choir.
Santa Teresa de Jesús stopped in Campo de la Verdad on her way to Seville in 1575 to hear mass in this chapel. This is the origin of the name for the square.
