Devotion to the Virgin of Linares dates back to the time of the reconquest of Cordoba by King San Fernando in the year 1236, when he carried her image as the ensign of his armies. This is why she is also known as the Virgen Conquistadora ("Conquering Virgin").
Horsemen and women, gaily decorated carts and pilgrims dressed in typical costume all join the procession which sets out for Linares every May to receive the blessing of the Virgin, in a festive atmosphere with much singing and dancing. The pilgrimage concludes at the Shrine of the Virgin of Linares, where after the mass, prizes are awarded for the best decorated carts.
In the area around the shrine, the pilgrims eat and drink with their friends and families who come from far and wide to celebrate this special day together.
